The ISU Annuitants Association (ISUAA) is the local chapter of the State Universities Annuitants Association (SUAA) and serves employees of Illinois State University that participate in SURS, retirees that receive a SURS pension, their spouses, and survivors.
Dear Illinois State University current and retired employees, spouses, and surviving spouses:
SUAA is fighting to protect your pension.
Since 1971, the State Universities Annuitants Association (SUAA) has been the fighting voice for active and retired public university and community college employees in Illinois. A crisis was averted three years ago. At that time, the Illinois General Assembly enacted legislation that would have significantly scaled back our pension and health care benefits. SUAA fought these unconstitutional provisions all the way to the Illinois Supreme Court—and WON that decision when the Supreme Court ruled that those changes would be unconstitutional. SUAA martialed a variety of resources which assisted in creating the win for all of us. It is your support of SUAA that enables the association to create the resources to protect our benefits. You have probably read recent newspaper articles reporting on Governor Rauner’s annual budget address, in which he proposed initiatives which could affect university employees in negative ways. He identified three major areas: 1) a pension ‘choice’
proposal for current employees; 2) possible changes to health-care benefits; 3) shifting pension and health care costs to the universities, community colleges and to public school districts. Our SUAA President Larry Alferink (also former ISUAA two-term President) has written an excellent summary about these proposals – that summary will be printed in the soon to be delivered Summer ISUAA Newsletter, which all ISUAA members receive.
As always, SUAA is on the frontlines fighting to preserve the pension rights of active, future, and retired employees as well as their spouses and survivors. SUAA is on the scene every day, battling against threats to our/your pension system. If you are not already a member, we welcome you to become a part of this important organization that is always supporting us.
YOUR SUAA membership demonstrates to elected officials that we are united and serious about protecting benefits for all members of the State University Retirement System (SURS) including current faculty-staff and their families. The more of us there are, the louder SUAA’s voice becomes in Springfield. Please remember that all employees, retirees, spouses, and surviving spouses are welcome to join.
Annual dues are only $40, which includes membership in our local chapter (ISUAA). We recommend a convenient monthly payroll deduction --- you can find a membership form here: http://annuitants.illinoisstate.edu/membership/. Please sign up and Join SUAA today.
With Redbird Pride and Commitment,
Gail A. Lamb, President ISUAA
